This post was originally written on the 28th December 2023 for The Commemoration of the Holy Innocents

When you see something like:
Israel hits Bethlehem in Christmas raids on occupied West Bank‘ you then know it’s finally time to write “The Time of the End is the Time of No Room” Redux !

There is just no question now that a sequel to the first instalment on this subject needs to be written.  I had been grappling with this idea sometime after I initially received the somewhat necessary and nonetheless ‘disturbing’ urge to write a second instalment on the original one I wrote around this time last year in contemplation of the alarmingly pertinant and timely issues raised by my reading of Thomas Merton’s classic essay on the finality of life for all and sundry, The Time of the End is the Time of No Room. ¹And the zeal for demonstrating through words on a page about how urgent our now-times are in light of these issues was instigated by none other than that infernally hideous war which began in the Holy Land in October of this year and has since then reached insanely diabolical proportions which have brought us into a new awareness of many things which perhaps were stridently hidden from view before. Jesus in the Gospels makes it clear that a time is indeed coming when “there is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known” (Luke 12 : 2) For inasmuch as the wicked may truly try and hide their most abominable schemas and keep their real intentions secret from the world at large, they will eventually be found out. And this brings me to the most pertinent point that during the Time of the End, inasmuch as there will be no room for love in the hearts of many, there will also be an inadvertently proportional judgement on those hearts of no love, beginning to take place, to unfold….and this will be seen in the fact that also at this Time of the End, there will be no more room for evil-doers to keep their wicked schemas and plans ‘safely’ hidden from view. The grimy crimes & misdemeanours of shuddery shade politics in our world will have their curtains drawn back to reveal them in all their grizzly garishness for the entire world to see so that we no longer live under the shadow of having the wool pulled over our eyes, the wool of the proverbial big bad wolf in sheep’s clothing that desires to keep us in the dark about what he is really up to!

Not all that long ago I chanced upon an article from an English Catholic News Reel called The Pillar and this article was trying to give some insight into the nature of that End Times figure we all know rather well in terms of colloquial familiarity called the Anti-Christ. One of the hallmarks of the era in which this Anti-Christ figure is supposed to beleaguer the earth is cited in Matthew 24 : 24 as a situation where“even the Elect will be deceived”. The Pillar article referred to here gives a substantial amount of weight to this hallmark of deception in that it appears that the author of the article himself is somewhat lured into the deception, accepting and endorsing its arguments. It is furthermore somewhat uncanny on the one hand but on the other hardly surprising that the very subject of the Elects’ own deception as hinted at in a certain Cardinal Giacomo Biffi’s heniously distorted take on the subject is that it concerns the paradoxical fact that these members of the Elect are themselves deceived about who or what this figure actually is, Cardinal Biffi included lest they realize the fact of their sorry condition:

https://www.pillarcatholic.com/p/antichrist-whats-that?utm_source=substack&utm_medium=email

Here in the URL cited above, a synopsis is given about the particular ideological faction that the author of this article in The Pillar  tends to side with and some of it is part of the deception. Basically their seeming adulation of Cardinal Giacomo Biffi’s rendering puts them on a very shaky footing since much of what he is reputed here to have said is not merely amounting to an endorsement of conspiracy theories but reeks of a doctrinal bent & theological discourse tragically way out of touch with a robustly Orthodox Catholicism built on the foundations of what the great St Pope John Paul II dubbed the Universal Call to Holiness ² – and no less the kind of Orthodoxy alluded to in Pope Francis’ more recent series of answers to the set of five Dubia ³ posed in late September by a group of disgruntled Cardinals from the United States of America. Biffi’s take on the Anti-Christ quoted here by The Pillar  moreover reeks of someone trying to reconstruct unhealthy kinds of pre-Vatican II styled ideological undercurrents that undermine the authentic universality of Catholic Social Teaching by indoctrinating Holy Mother Church to become inward looking, paranoid about outsiders, and unwilling to evangelistically engage the wider world through a lens of living Gospel values which are steeped in a relational symbiosis between righteousness and mercy – the foundation or cornerstone of God’s love.

Take a look at this….

“Advent is a time to look with hope to the coming of Christ, at Christmas, for sure, but for the first few weeks we focus on his coming in glory at the end of time. Of course, a sign we’ve hit the end times will be the rise of the Anti-Christ — a Biblical figure often invoked in our public discourse.

But while the term ‘Anti-Christ’ has become common currency, especially when discussing one’s political or even ecclesiastical opponents, what, exactly, does it mean? We have an explainer to unpack it for you.

For what it’s worth, in [the year] 2000, Cardinal Giacomo Biffi suggested that the Anti-Christ might already be among us, “most likely now disguised as a philanthropist supporting creeds like vegetarianism, animal rights or pacifism, or advocating dialogue with Orthodox or Anglican believers.”

Of course, I reflexively disagree with the cardinal about dialogue with our Orthodox brethren, though I do think we should hear him out on vegetarianism.

Anyway, for a rundown on what you need to know about the Anti-Christ, read our whole story here.”

Get this!  I can’t believe it!! This author even goes so far as to say that this Cardinal Biffi is ‘correct’ in dubbing vegetarianism as being of ‘the Anti-Christ’!?! Nevermind the fact there is monumental evidence from the lives of many of the Saints, (and particularly those from earlier periods like St Francis of Assisi, St Bernard of Clairvaux, St John of the Cross, St Peter of Alcantara not to mention a good number of contemporary ones at that including the now-considered venerable Antonio Gaudi) – that this choice to abstain permanently from eating meat was something they bore as a charism inspired by God – and which they lived out with the holy desire to see themselves purified from certain things which if not disengaged from, could lead them away from perfecting the moral & theological dimensions of their respective vocations. With this in mind, I was shocked to read of this Cardinal’s stubborn refusal to understand that the ways in which God nurtures and grows peoples’ faith are for the most part not ours to judge or scoff at out of an attitude of pompous arrogance but rather, instead, these humanly innumerable & oftentimes unfathomable mysterious ways of His beg us to examine our hearts more closely to see if we are really treating others and their own unique calls and paths in the spiritual life with a healthy dose of humility. For we are not the Potter. We are the clay. The Potter is God, Who btw, has the ultimate right to choose how He fashions those He calls. And if this fashioning should include positively gracing certain souls with the charisms of either:

1. philanthropy in the spirit of good-will, or
2. abstaining permanently from eating meat, or
3. giving to the least in our world the charity of love through hearts of compassion, where these “least in our world” also include the animal creation who cannot speak up for their own needs in either Congress or the U.N., and of course much, much more; so that the whole creation can one day truly reveal the Glory of God by its life, or
4. by proactively engaging in constructive dialogue with those of other denominations and faiths, thereby sowing the seeds of Christ’s peace in our world as the antidote to needless wars and conflicts,

….then who are we to tell Him, that is, God, that these things (which btw, are all perfectly compatible with the Gospel) should be shunned, avoided, and thrown in the cosmic trashcan as ‘being of the Anti-Christ’!?

Actually, it’s clear from what I have set out here to unpack who the real heretics are….And I’ll be frank – none other than those who, like this Cardinal, and not to mention the author of the Pillar article, seek to oppose the multifaceted and mysterious myriad works of the Holy Spirit by negatively smearing these works, emblazoning them with the accusatory charge that they are none other than ‘the works of the Anti-Christ’! Sound familiar? Remember the Gospel of Luke, ch11  v14-23 and likewise, the Gospel of Matthew, ch12  v22-30? Well, these are the passages in Scripture where some of the religious leaders of the day were castigating the works of Jesus as ‘those of the Anti-Christ’ for what is Beelzebub but another name for the spirit of the Anti-Christ.

And so you have the pythonic incubus-succubus relationship of stealth between the terrors of war and the cunning deception of false moral pretexts, both of which aim to squeeze the life out of our world by their subtle, almost ubiquitously imperceptible covert designs coupled with their full-blown manifestations of unrighteous anger, destruction and death. That is the nature of monster the Book of Revelation calls The Beast. And while images also abound in this same Biblical narrative of a red Loch Ness like leviathan with many ugly reptilian protrusions and not to mention, horns, we can be certain that this grotesque gargoylean imagery is lock, stock, and barrel indicative of the dark, foreboding, and unmerciful distorted nature of fallen pride, that is, the pride of Lucifer which was the menacing inverse of the unbridled gratitude and thanksgiving which the Supreme Good and Author of All Life imbibed within the original infused nature of His angelic messengers. And we see this fallen pride attempting to devour the earth – there’s something of the scene from Revelation, ch 12 v 1-5 because we often hear, particularly in Noahide cultures⁵ of the Earth Mother or Mother Earth. And in some ways, Our Lady can be seen in this role too since she is the Mother of Our Lord Who was not only Fully Divine but also Fully Human….and when we take that Fullness of Humanity and look at it in all earnestness, we come to see that Our Lord did indeed embrace within His Most Sacred Humanity, the Fullness of All the Earth – which means that everything – in Heaven and on Earth will be subject to Him for He will draw all things to Himself….. which btw, is a reflection of the passage in Corinthians 15 : 28  and is also shown as forthcoming in John 12 : 31-32. And because we may allegorically see Mary’s womb to be a kind of representation of the Sacred Earth which God made before the Fall of mankind from Grace, her Son therefore is the Incarnate Imago Dei ⁶ as the Fullness of Heaven on Earth or as bringing the Fullness of Heaven to Earth. Therefore we are given a glimpse in Revelation 12 : 1-5 of how utterly spiteful and unrelenting Lucifer’s campaign is against the work of cosmic Salvation. And this diabolical retaliation against Christ and His mother not only took the form of Herod’s ghastly vendetta against the newborn King as we see from the slaying of the Holy Innocents in the City of David (aka Bethlehem) but it now also takes the form of countless wars and conflicts of all kinds raging upon and against the earth and all its inhabitants. For the earth as it is now, in God’s grand Salvation plan, is the womb of a new earth, and this new earth yet to be born will reflect the Fullness of Heaven at the Fullness of Time. So the great cosmic battle instigated by the profligate dragon rages against the earth mother just as it did against the Mother of God Incarnate as she awaited and welcomed His human birth. And all because this dragon does not want to see the taking place of the consummation of the New Heavens with the New Earth as this will mean from the womb of the old earth in cooperation with the Will of Heaven, a new Christocentric reality is born – one that eternally fuses Heaven with Earth in a similar manner to how the two were fused together prior to the cosmic separation as instigated by the Fall of Adam and Eve from Grace.

So how does all of this tie in with the tragedy of a Holy Land under the siege of military strife and terror? Well it points to the reality that unlike Biffi’s imaginary and fallacious take on the Anti-Christ, the real one is in a very different way, in our midst and while it does take many forms, the veil of deception has somewhat been lifted on that particular spectre of the Anti-Christ figure haunting the Holy Land, and it isn’t btw to be found at this time in either Christian or Islamic extremism but instead in Jewish extremism. It is a peculiar re-run too of the kind of Jewish extremism practiced by the ruling elite, the religious leaders in Jesus’ own day, and how this legalistic tyranny was imposed on the Biblical nation of Israel at that time is somehow, in our time, reconfigured anew, only this time with the most sophisticated machinery of war the world has yet seen, not by the clutter of bows & arrows or a society enstructurated within the clasp of authoritarian serfdom but by air-raid sirens, bombs, tanks, and artillery fire callously tearing asunder the serenity of silent nights and the peace of future days for thousands upon thousands of innocent civilians, which is why I no longer ascribe to the notion of the modern Israeli State as a legitimate entity.

By contrast, the Israeli State is an illegitimate entity as it was artificially constructed in 1948 as a puppet separatist state in contravention of the post-WWI League of Nations Agreement on the status of Palestine, which btw was supposed to culminate in a completed transition from being under the British Mandate to that of a fully independent nation whereby the legitimate ruling entity was implied under the agreement to be a multi-ethnic, multi-faith state called Palestine that was to incorporate a recognition of the tribal homeland of Israel for the Jewish people as a First Nation in a positively harmonious co-existential conjunction with the diversity of other extant communities who are also historically rooted there. However, this never eventuated.⁷ What was set up in its place was nothing short of a disaster, something that allowed old, unhealed wounds to fester and become mortally septic for not only the Jewish community but indeed the entire Palestinian nation.

That said, the Jewish people had a legitimate Right of Return but it’s tantamount to tragic that many of these refugees and their descendants, since the time of their colossal return to Palestine, from a Europe still languishing in the aftermath of the Second World War, sadly abused this right. They were indeed seeking asylum, escaping from the terrors of Nazi domination in Europe. They fled the horrors of war only to start another one themselves – back in the old country! And all this precisely because the far better outcome proposed by the League of Nations at the close of the First World War never eventuated! Can we honestly say, that the reason why a stupid war began in Palestine in 1948, instigated at that by those irresponsible few claiming to represent the Right of Return of Jewish refugees from Europe was due to this better proposal of an independent Palestine (for all faiths and cultures of connection) not ever having emerged? This question itself is a quandary as it’s a bit like a case of which came first, “the chicken or the egg?” Because hypothetically, if an independent Palestine emerged somewhere in between the ends of both World Wars, this 1948 problem quite likely would never have reared its ugly head, why? Well, because the Jewish refugees from Europe would have simply been welcomed into and integrated back into an already-existing stable structure within which they could freely participate alongside everybody else to co-create a brighter future for the nation. And even better if this structure remained in some senses part of the Commonwealth of Nations. It would actually be alot like Singapore today. No wars, nothin. My heart aches to the max that this brighter future never happened for the Palestine of the 20th century.

And now we have this never-before imagined tragedy in the 21st, and one which simply turns on its head the anti-war rallying cry born from the ashes of the Shoah, NEVER AGAIN! Actually, what ought to have happened instead of Netanyahu’s government starting this war is that all the individual criminals responsible for the murders & assaults on Oct 7th-10th should have been thoroughly investigated by the crime-scene experts garnered from both geographical locations, that is, both sides of the Gazan border and had them arrested and then charged in a local court of criminal law.

There are no excuses for war. Alot of innocent lives trampled so cruelly – and thousands – being unnecessarily lost all because of some criminal racketeers from a drug-binge Rave⁸ who did a sniper job on Oct 7th alongside a corrupt government that covertly partners with these criminals and has (because of their Mafiosi allegiances), no prudence whatsoever but is shamelessly reckless in its decision to opt for military conflict over resolving these things another way!!! Absolutely outrageous. NEVER AGAIN! means NEVER AGAIN! to war, PERIOD….And so we see that here you have a classic example of the proverbial big bad wolf in sheep’s clothing, and in Benjamin Netanyahu, a raging Herod of the 21st century. These Israeli politicians don the outer Jewish garments of praise while they plot and scheme with the drug barons and arms-wheeling and dealing, military Mafiosis of the world in order to exact the terror of vengeance upon all and sundry who do not tow their particular line of religious thought. And what’s more is that this particular line happens to be a very exclusivistic and no doubt ribald extremist take on Orthodox Judaism. It is as extremist as ISIS re: the Islamic State and National Socialism re: the German Fatherland. It can even be said to be a curious admixture of the two aforementioned ideologies, albeit dressed in Jewish clothing, and we all know that sheep are a cultural symbol of the tribe of Judah, and the nation of Israel but in this specific politicocultural context, behind a sheep’s veneer, there is a wolf so mean. And so we have it that the current State of Israel is not the true Biblical nation of Israel, as this modern political travisty is far more equivalent to that spoken of in Matthew 24 : 15, the “abomination set up in the Holy Place, in the Place where it should not be.” And that Holy Place is none other than the Holy Land itself which is benighted and besieged by ruthless war-mongering opportunists disguised as devout Jews.

They’re Cutting Them Down! They’re Cutting The Sugar Trees Down!! 😭

The first scene in The Lorax by Dr Seuss

We can see too why this whole discourse is demonstrative of how Dr Seuss’ Lorax ⁹ is startlingly relevant to our time & in particular to what is going on in the Holy Land. It is beginning to look alot like a situation where sooner or later in that place, there will be no room at all for honouring the sacredness of life in all its raw beauty of both God-given simplicity and diversity. While you may not see either any literal Truffulas ¹⁰ (aka: Sugar Trees ¹¹) of the kind depicted in The Lorax, but like the terrain in The Lorax the terrain in Palestine has been predominantly a desert oasis since time immemorial with date palms routinely dotting the landscape. These date palms are the closest thing we have on earth to the Truffulas (aka: Sugar Trees) of Dr Seuss Lore. And although we do not witness any mass-deforestation taking place there, the amount of destruction that infernal raucous and unrestrained military incendiaries causes to the landscape is tantamount to an almost complete felling of the Amazon with the miscellaneous ripple-on effects from this felling which would result over time since constant artillery fire, shelling, and the raining of bombs negatively impacts not only the immediate quality of life on or above-ground but it also adversely affects the stability of the geological core below ground. Somebody said in a talk given recently on the situation in the Middle East¹² that regarding the war in Syria from 2011-2020, one of the other most significant aftermaths of the devastation besides just the sheer infrastructural damage to the cities and towns impacted by the war was the increase in seismic activity of notable proportions. In February this year a huge earthquake struck in Syria and Turkey near the border. Aleppo was affected and this again proves that the epicentre of fighting can become a future epicentre of seismic destruction. And perhaps more especially so in locations where the evolution of geological formations over aeons of geological time has tended towards pushing masses upon masses of boulders and rock from beneath the earth so as to pile them above it as is commonly seen in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern terrain, unlike places such as the British & Emerald Isles, Normandy including the South Western parts of France, and much of North Central and Eastern Europe where some comports of rocky terrain is frequently interspersed with either walds i.e. dense & green woodlands, or commons i.e. gently undulating flatlands that are green and fertile.

My mother once said that when they, the people who went to Easter Island went there, “they eventually cut all the trees down” and ended up not only fighting each other but eating each other as well! There is no surprise in the reason why God was angry about the separation between the Northern and Southern tribes of Israel, not to mention the ferocious idolatry practiced by many in the North. This calamity in Biblical history led to the Northern tribes becoming “lost” to the mists of history and the stuff of tradition and myth. The Hawaiian natives claim descendance from ancient Israel and their language is distantly related to Hebrew. All the Polynesians who spread around the Pacific Islands from the South American coastline bordering Chile and Argentina are related including the Hawaiians, Tahitians and Easter Islanders, not to mention those further West in places like Samoa, Tonga, the South Pacific, and of course the New Zealand Maoris.

And so we see now that the Land of the Sugar Trees¹³ has been invaded by the ghastly Trolls from that formidable place so strangely dubbed by Maurice Sendak as “Where the Wild Things Are”¹⁴ But you couldn’t exactly call the Trolls of Sendak’s fable “wild” in the positive sense of the word to mean “spirited and free”…..They are then only “wild” in the sense of being uncouth, brutal, insensitive buffoons who traipse through life strutting none other than ogreish stuff. And as for the real People of Israel, the real Jews, they’re beautiful people alright, but the Devil’s really mucking things around in that area right now!

And what a year we are witnessing unfold even as it is still barely with us. Such a time as ours is one where we couldn’t be urged more strongly to remain ever watchful. For deep and hard lessons await those who look the other way and heed not the “Watchful Hour”.¹⁵ The “Watchful Hour” is the necessary prelude to the “Triumphant Hour”¹⁶, that hour when Our Lord was first made manifest among us (in the fragility of His newborn humanity)….and someday will be made manifest among us yet again (in the splendour of His divine glory). And it is just so heartbreaking to realize that in our midst now, there are those who still, after all these centuries, haven’t ‘a clue’ as to the meaning of the necessity to be “watchful” for they are tragically asleep, as if in a coma of the world’s making. And so the demons lurk…and seek their prey in hearts such as these whom learn not & stubbornly refuse to reverently honour the stark lessons of history, and history at that not so far removed from our own millennial era. This reconjures images of that Biblical passage where Jesus was on the Way to Calvary and He stopped to console the weeping women of Jerusalem….He said to them “Weep not for Me but weep instead for yourselves, and your children and your children’s children…..for the time is coming when it would be better for the wombs that have never given birth and the breasts that have never nursed…..if they do this when the wood is green, what will they then do when it is dry?” ¹⁷ Considering this prophetic and timely word of Our Lord then, is it no wonder the poor land of His Incarnation, of His earthly sojourn is still besieged in the now-time by the horrors of wars and internal strife the likes of which have never been seen since destruction of Jerusalem in 70AD? And so as to the tragedy of the thousands upon thousands of newly made refugees, of exiles from this war in the Holy Land, who will find room in their hearts and in their homes for them? We hope and pray that the assured answer is far more than none at all or merely just a few. War is nothing other than Nihilism in all it’s fury. It is about time GOD came again to save us, not only from the demons, the ogres, the trolls but also from the worst of ourselves.

O Leader of the House of Israel, giver of the Law to Moses on Sinai: Come to rescue us with your mighty power!

+++

O Root of Jesse’s stem, sign of God’s love for all his people: Come to save us without delay!

+++

O Key of David, opening the gates of God’s eternal Kingdom: Come and free the prisoners of darkness!

+++

O Radiant Dawn, Splendor of Eternal Light, Sun of Justice: Come and shine on those who dwell in darkness and in the shadow of death.

+++

O King of all nations and Keystone of the Church: Come and save man, whom you formed from the dust!

+++

O Emmanuel, our King and Giver of Law: Come to save us, Lord our God!”

The Lorax is a story written by Dr Seuss and most especially fashioned for children. It is an all-time classic in children’s literature and is actually allegorical take on the destruction caused by greed for money, resources and the senseless tragedies of waste and disregard for the preciousness of life. It attempts to show how the quality of life for all creation is sorely compromised because of such tragedies.
¹⁰ “Truffulas” – a kind of tree featured in The Lorax by Dr Seuss which may have sprouted from Grickle Grass – (a type of grass in The Lorax kind of similar to wild Rye grasses). These trees have trunks that are visually similar to palm trees but are unique in that their trunks are the colour and texture of tigers’ tails. They have soft “feline” sugar tops on them  that swirl around in the breeze and are not meant to be eaten or even harvested at all because they are more like animals but their fruits can be eaten and are similar to palm dates in that they are sweet and kind of molassesy like maple syrup
¹¹ “Sugar Trees” – my nick-name for Truffulas
¹² The Night of the Witnesses – an event I attended in November this year which was a prayerful solidarity commemoration of all those suffering in the Middle East and other political hot spots as a result of the tragedy of wars and conflicts
¹³ “Land of the Sugar Trees” is a term of endearment which came into my heart as I reflected on the relationship between the Land of Our Lord’s earthly sojourn and more specifically that of His birth, the gorgeous Truffula Trees in Dr Seuss’ Lorax, and the heart of someone very special to me who incidentally passed away around three years ago now.
¹⁴ Where the Wild Things Are was written by Maurice Sendak as a piece of children’s literature about the life of Trolls. A Troll is a fabled monster from myth and legend similar in many ways to an Ogre, which is basically an evil, ugly giant. In Hebraic tradition the Golem is equivalent and it is sometimes mused that the Biblical character of Goliath was a Golem.
¹⁵ “The Watchful Hour” is a both a literal and figurative rendering of how God expects our spiritual attentiveness and preparedness to become, to be. Jesus makes specific reference to the importance of being watchful at various points throughout the Gospels and the importance of this attitude of watchfulness was most significantly highlighted in the Garden of Gethsemane during His holy Agony. During Advent, we are also implored to become watchful because this state of awareness represents a necessary condition of readiness in our souls that we need to cultivate in anticipation of the visitation of God into the midst of our lives during our earthly sojourn to help us on our way as well as to be make ready our souls and lives for that moment when we are called by Him from this earthly life, into our Eternal existence. In the spiritual life, a humble and astute attitude of watchfulness is necessary so that we can rightly avoid dangers and pitfalls along the way.
¹⁶ Triumphant Hour was a movie made in 1953 depicting the moment of Jesus’ Incarnation as the decisive moment in all history when the reign of darkness was intrinsically defeated on a universal scale. Complementarily then, His Passion and Resurrection was the extrinsic culmination of what His Incarnation swung into motion. A snippet of the movie’s Easter climax can be viewed here: https://youtu.be/11lMenVtQnM?si=9FSLfkKXrXsyFsv-
