Real, authentic God-breathed love is the antithesis of lust whereas lust is the polar inverse of love. The world, too many times, misconstrues love for lust and vice-versa. The proper definition of love is rightly ordered passion, passion that directs itself in the direction of purity of both heart and intention or will. The proper definition of lust is disordered passion, one that is particularly obsessed with fleshly gratification, and which consequentially travels in directions contrary to the God-ordained purpose of life. It is important to note that when the word “fleshly” is used here, it is not referring in this context exclusively to “the physical” condition but rather, to those conditions that comprise both physical and spiritual attributes, and which follow a course contrary to one that honours God’s ways, and God’s values, one that runs counter to a life that produces good fruit. Passion or zeal for life can be virtuous when directed towards those ends that honour God’s holy will through a conscientious appreciation and love for upholding the sanctity of life itself.
