Amazing! Phenomenal!!
He had something that appears to be akin to an illumination of conscience.
This article cited above about Star Trek actor William Shatner is astounding because it reveals the truth about why all this worldly fanaticism over going to Mars or some other planet in order to live there is not only a waste of time but is grossly out of step with God’s plan for the universe. Firstly, God didn’t create this earth for nothing. Secondly, He didn’t send His only Son onto planet earth for nothing and because it was for something, that something cannot and is not meant to be substituted in significance-terms with something else, be it trying to take the havoc humankind has beset this earth with someplace else under the deception of escaping to a so-called freedom someplace else. Frankly, the immense sadness and grief which struck William Shatner upon seeing earth – in person from outer space – is none other than a conviction of the Holy Spirit – not letting him forget the profound and immense importance of the blue planet in term’s of God’s bigger-picture purpose for the life He created. If God wanted us to forget about earth and travel to other galaxies, He would not have sent His only Son to this earth, (not to Mars or any other planet), but to this earth in order to save us. The Bible has a narrative that is eschatological for a reason and that eschatology involves earth and the heavens as God purposed them to be in relationship to each other. It does not at any point of the narrative deviate away from the ultimate cosmic significance of earth as the central and essential point of reference in relation to the divine will of heaven in consumating the original grand purpose for God having fashioned this earth in such a loving and marvelous way. Therefore to shift the focus of human progress away from getting our relationship with God and the rest of creation here on earth corrected, towards a fantasy world of escapist idolatry someplace else in the vast expanses of the universe is not only an example of ingratitude for the immeasurable gift with which God has already endowed us here on earth but it is going down the path to hell, for such extravagant projects as trying to cultivate life on Mars are not only escapist but actually lures of the ancient serpent in order that we become distracted from discovering and anchoring ourselves in our real God-given purpose. The flight of fancy re: extraterrestrial living is just another frivolous passtime with truly evil implications for not only our earthly cohesiveness but for the wellbeing of our souls.
It’s truly a God-send that William Shatner presented at COP15 for it was God who truly imprinted upon his soul while on that space voyage last year, an experience of learning about how vitally important and eternally significant, the preciousness of life here on earth actually is. It was truly a spiritual awakening within, that recognition which dawned on his heart about the ultimate futility of “going where no man has ever gone before”! And this very catch-cry echoes an important salvatory message in many more ways than one…..it also fills us with a certain hope that we need not venture to where “no man has ever gone before” for to do so in such a cosmic way would be akin to venturing into perdition itself….Not that God created the mighty universe as a black hole of perdition but when He did create the vast expanses, He did so by placing boundaries around everything for a reason. We only have to look at the lesson from Genesis, Chapter 3 to realize that if such a dishonouring of those boundaries put in place by God back then could cause a monumental calamity, then what ‘valid’ excuse do we have to ignore such a lesson in the now time or in the future for that matter? For such transgressive explorations are nothing but foolhardy and more than a gamble with destructive forces. God gave our first parents solid, healthy boundaries for a good reason. Do we need to go through another episode of this kind of cosmic-scale transgression to learn it all over again? Indeed, many have still not learnt from the first time round.
But God in His omnipotent mercy knows this and because He realizes that we are a stubborn lot, He put in place certain stoppages to reseal the boundaries that were broken by our first parents. And one of them was the Incarnation, the other being Calvary and the corresponding Resurrection. These are remedies of cosmic proportions and they happened here on earth for good reason. These remedies besides heralding glad tidings, they also issued forth warnings, as a timely reminder that our fallen state is still permitted to retaliate against the mercy and compassion of the divine will. It was the providence of God that issued such warnings because He knows that we need to be reminded not to forget we still have contesting our right to be co-heirs with Christ, an adversary, that same adversary who hid behind the mask of a serpent in the Garden of Eden. And because we are pitted against this adversary in a cosmic battle for maintaining our status as beloved of God, the Creator of all, we need to be conscious that we are in this battle and are being relentlessly pursued by this adversary. This adversary or the Devil, as he is most commonly known, is not content to sit back and let us claim this prize which God so graciously won for us at Calvary. Yes, God won it for us but we also have a co-responsibility to do our part of the restoration process in co-operation with God, in solidarity with all the Holy powers of Heaven to secure our divine right to be co-heirs. This is what is meant by Jesus’ exhortation for each of us to “take up our Cross and follow Him”. Only by following our Redeemer can we be secure in the knowledge of our faith and what this means for us as one human family living in co-existence with the rest of God’s beloved creation. And to do this we need to heed the timely providential guidence given us about the importance of boundaries, not only earthly ones but cosmic ones too.
While it is true that the cosmic reality of God’s creation extends to planet earth as a kind of resonance of interconnectedness that holds the entire creation within a harmonic state, that which Einstein referred to as equilibrium, I had earlier alluded to another kind of ripple-effect between earth and the cosmos when I spoke of the Fall from Grace instigated by Adam & Eve in the Garden of Eden as a “cosmic-scale transgression”. Yes, it was a transgression on a cosmic-scale which is precisely why its only remedy had to be one of divine proportion. And this once and again tells us just how crucial it is to keep our hearts centered on Heaven with our feet firmly planted here on earth.
